Briarwood Schools 3rd Grade Class of Ms. Gaye Wright and Ms.Judy Matheny visited Birdsong Resort and Marina today to take part in a Pearl of a Tour with tour guide Vanessa Patton. During the tour the children learned about the history of Pearls, the pearl cultivation process and the unique mussel industry that dominates the mid-section of Kentucky Lake for approximately 40 miles each side of the Kentucky-Tennessee state line. They also witnessed a remarkable iridescent product of nature as it emerges from the indigenous Washboard mussel. Tennessee's Official State Gem - the freshwater pearl - is rarely found naturally from these living animals, but grown at the only freshwater pearl-culturing farm operation in the North American continent right here in Benton County Camden, Tennessee. The tour ended in Birdsong's Gift shop and Museum where the group received information packets containing information about the pearl farm and the surrounding area along with a group photo for them to take home to as a reminder of their visit.
