Briarwood Schools 3rd Grade Class of Ms. Jill Barnett and 4th Grade Class of Ms. Teresa Jones visited Birdsong Resort and Marina October 31st, 2006 to take part in A Pearl of a Tour with tour guide and Owner, Bob Keast.

The children learned about the history of Pearls, the pearl cultivation process and the unique mussel industry that dominates the mid-section of Kentucky Lake for approximately 40 miles each side of the Kentucky-Tennessee state line. They also witnessed a remarkable iridescent product of nature as it emerges from the indigenous Washboard mussel. Tennessee's Official State Gem - the freshwater pearl - is rarely found naturally from these living animals, but grown at the only freshwater pearl-culturing farm operation in the North American continent right here in Benton County Camden, Tennessee. The tour ended in Birdsong's Gift shop and Museum where the group received information packets containing information about the pearl farm, Russell the Mussel along with maps and tourist information about the surrounding area. Both classes posed for a group photo that each child received to take home with them as well as being put up on the internet site of www.BirdsongResort.com as a fun reminder of their visit.
