Miles Dean of Piscataway, NJ and Jim Kelly of Hartford, CT stopped in at Birdsong Resort and Marina

bob-miles On December 11, 2007 Miles Dean of Piscataway, NJ and Jim Kelly of Hartford, CT stopped in at Birdsong Resort and Marina to stay overnight. Miles and Jim are members of the Black Heritage Riders association. In 1992 the Black Heritage Riders organized in New Jersey and within a few years became New Jersey's premier African American horse riding organization.

The BHR riders along with their color guard and horse drawn wagons marched in parades, performed at festivals, and participated in rodeos. The BHR prepared workshops which showcased individual member riding skills and, along with audio/visual aids, presentations were given on the historical roles African American cowboys and cowgirls played in the western frontier.

The BHR's uniformed and organized marching unit performed in events throughout New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York winning awards and trophies for "Best Marching Unit". The BHR recently reorganized to become a non-profit educational organization with a focus on developing and implementing educational initiatives. Our mission is to promote educational reform in the pubic school system.
